Nineteen NZ Visitor Visa Categories Go Online-Only From 24 September

Summary

Immigration New Zealand will move 19 visitor visa categories, including Business, Parent and Grandparent, and Medical Treatment Visitor Visas, exclusively onto its enhanced Immigration Online system from 24 September 2026. Applicants with draft applications in the old system have until 8 October 2026 to submit them before they are deleted. INZ says processing times, currently around one week, are expected to remain stable through the transition.

Our Analysis

• We're auditing every client's draft visitor visa applications now, before the 8 October deletion deadline hits.
• Business sponsors hosting overseas staff should lodge early — no one wants a rebuilt application mid-October.
• INZ's phased rollout suggests more categories will migrate; we're building this into standard client checklists.
• Stable one-week processing is reassuring, but system-transition hiccups are still possible in week one.

Full Story

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is moving 19 visitor visa categories exclusively onto its enhanced Immigration Online system from 24 September 2026, marking one of the largest single steps yet in the agency's shift away from legacy application forms.

The affected categories span a broad range of travel purposes, including the General Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa, Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, Medical Treatment Visitor Visa and Sports Events Visitor Visa, among others. A small number of categories, notably the Partner of a New Zealander Visitor Visa and Child of a New Zealander Visitor Visa, will remain on the older system for now, while the Trafficking Child Victim Visitor Visa moves to paper applications only.

INZ has set a firm timeline around the transition. From 24 September, new applications in any of the 19 categories must be lodged through the enhanced system rather than the legacy portal. Applicants who already have draft applications sitting in the old system have until 8 October 2026 to complete and submit them; any drafts left unsubmitted after that date will be permanently deleted, forcing applicants to start over from scratch in the new platform. Applications already submitted before the cutover will continue to be processed as normal and are not affected by the change.

Officials have stressed that the update concerns where applications are lodged rather than how they are assessed, and current average processing times of around one week for visitor visas are expected to hold steady through the transition.

For immigration advisers and frequent travel sponsors, particularly businesses hosting visiting staff, event organisers and families sponsoring parent or grandparent visits, the shift creates a narrow window to clear outstanding draft applications before the deadline. Firms managing multiple simultaneous applications should audit any in-progress drafts now to avoid data loss and processing delays once the old system closes to new submissions.

The move follows earlier transitions of Group Visitor, Approved Destination Status Group and Tour Escort Visitor visas onto the enhanced platform in August, continuing INZ's phased modernisation of its online application infrastructure.
