CPA Australia Members Gain New New Zealand Residence Pathway

Summary

Eligible CPA Australia members can claim six points under New Zealand’s Skilled Migrant Category through the occupational registration pathway from 24 August 2026. The recognition applies to members able to undertake Qualified Statutory Accountant work in New Zealand. Applicants must still meet employment, health, character, English-language and other residence requirements.

Our Analysis

• We see this as a practical residence opportunity for internationally qualified accountants with genuine New Zealand employment.
• Advisers should verify duties carefully; CPA membership alone does not establish Qualified Statutory Accountant eligibility.
• Employers can use the change to strengthen recruitment and retention discussions with experienced finance professionals.

Full Story

Eligible CPA Australia members can now access a clearer pathway to New Zealand residence after the country’s revised Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa settings took effect on 24 August 2026.

Under the updated rules, accountants who are able to undertake the work of a Qualified Statutory Accountant in New Zealand and hold CPA Australia membership may claim six points through the occupational registration pathway. Six points is the threshold required for the points-based Skilled Migrant Category route, although applicants must also have skilled employment or a skilled job offer in New Zealand and satisfy the category’s other requirements.

CPA Australia welcomed the change, describing it as the result of sustained advocacy to secure recognition of its members’ professional designation within New Zealand’s skilled residence framework. The development is particularly relevant to accountants already working in New Zealand, as well as overseas professionals assessing whether the country offers a viable long-term migration option.

The change does not create an automatic residence entitlement. Applicants must still meet Immigration New Zealand requirements covering age, health, character, English-language ability, accredited employment and evidence that their role is genuine and available on an ongoing basis. Professional membership alone will not replace the need for a qualifying job or employment offer.

For immigration advisers and employers, the recognition creates a more targeted planning opportunity. CPA Australia members may need to assess whether their actual duties align with Qualified Statutory Accountant work, whether their employment meets the relevant skill and wage rules, and how their professional evidence should be presented. Employers recruiting internationally qualified finance professionals may also find the revised settings more useful when discussing retention and residence prospects.

CPA Australia has encouraged members considering migration, or already employed in New Zealand, to review their circumstances against Immigration New Zealand’s current rules before submitting an application.
