New Zealand increased citizenship application and related product fees from August 28, 2026. The citizenship application fee rose by 14.4 percent to reflect higher operating costs and investment in technology. Immigration advisers should update quotations, engagement documents and client checklists to reflect the revised charges.
• We see an immediate need to refresh citizenship quotations and explain the August 28 effective date.
• Accurate fee guidance will become increasingly important as clients combine professional, translation and certification costs.
• The technology investment signals continued pressure to modernise New Zealand’s identity-service delivery.
• Our team will verify every citizenship fee before lodgement and document the advice provided.
New Zealand citizenship application and related product fees increased from 12:01 a.m. on August 28, following a fee adjustment announced by the Department of Internal Affairs on August 27. The citizenship application fee rose by 14.4 percent, adding a new cost consideration for migrants progressing from residence to New Zealand citizenship.
The Department of Internal Affairs said the increase reflects the rising cost of delivering citizenship services, including inflation, wage growth, higher operating expenses and investment in replacing an ageing core technology system. Existing charges were no longer sufficient to recover the cost of providing the service.
For immigration advisers and service providers, the change creates an immediate need to review client cost estimates, engagement letters and application checklists. Applicants who were preparing to lodge citizenship applications should confirm the current fee schedule before submitting documents, while advisers may need to distinguish clearly between immigration, citizenship and other identity-service charges.
The department said it had limited the scale of the increase through operational improvements, higher staff productivity and greater automation. Those measures have expanded processing capacity and allowed applications to be handled more efficiently using existing resources, according to the announcement.
DIA also stated that New Zealand’s citizenship fees remain comparatively low against several similar countries, including Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. However, the timing of the adjustment means applicants already budgeting for professional advice, document certification, translations and travel may face higher overall naturalisation costs.
The fee change underscores the importance of accurate, up-to-date cost guidance in citizenship-related services. Advisers should communicate the effective date clearly and ensure clients understand that applications lodged from August 28 are subject to the revised charges.
